San Crispín and the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation: building networks to transform Menorca’s food system

Over recent months, San Crispín has taken another step forward in its commitment to local produce, Menorca’s farming community and a more sustainable food model. We have done so alongside the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, an organisation with which we share a fundamental belief: transforming the food system is not only about producing better food, but also about building networks, improving market access and strengthening links between producers, retailers and citizens.

The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation is a private, non-profit family foundation created in 2010 and active in Spain since 2014. Its work focuses on two main areas: Sustainable Food and Citizen Art, with the overall aim of contributing to a fairer and more sustainable society.

In the field of food, the Foundation promotes systems that provide healthy food while respecting people and ecosystems, strengthening connections between production, citizens and local territories. Its approach covers the whole value chain, from field to plate.

From the Field to the Pantry

Our relationship with the Foundation entered a new phase when “Teixint Xarxes: canals curts i justos per al camp menorquí” was selected in the fourth Del Campo a la Despensa programme.

More than 70 proposals were submitted from across Spain and only eight projects were selected, sharing a total of €700,000 in support. The programme promotes collective initiatives related to food processing, logistics and distribution, while strengthening small-scale local production and short supply chains. The selected projects also receive specialist support in strategy, governance and business models.

For San Crispín, Teixint Xarxes is much more than a project run by the Cooperative. Its purpose is to work together with Menorca’s farming sector and other organisations to find solutions to some of the obstacles preventing more local and agroecological produce from reaching consumers.

In January 2025, together with GOB Menorca, we organised a series of working groups, followed in March by a co-creation session involving around forty participants. This process has enabled us to identify needs, share different perspectives and begin developing possible solutions.

Our goals include strengthening alliances between producers and organisations, facilitating market access, exploring new distribution models and working towards a future Agroecological Distribution Centre (CAD)serving Menorca’s producers.

Much more than financial support

One of the distinctive aspects of the Carasso Foundation is that its involvement goes well beyond funding. Its approach combines funding, support, networking, evaluation, learning and knowledge sharing, and giving projects a voice.

In 2025 alone, the Foundation distributed €23.5 million through 210 grants in France and Spain. Sustainable Food accounted for €11.9 million across 86 grants, while €12.8 million was distributed through 103 grants in Spain overall.

The partnership has also given us opportunities to exchange experiences beyond Menorca. On 18 June we took part in Unoconcinco 2026, Sustainable Food Meetings, held at Infinito Delicias in Madrid, a space created by the Foundation to bring together food, culture and citizen innovation.

For San Crispín, being part of this network is above all an opportunity to learn, share and bring experiences back to Menorca that can help build a stronger, more local and more resilient food system.

Supporting local produce is not simply about putting it on our shelves. It also means helping to create the conditions that allow Menorca’s producers to continue their work and making it increasingly easy for their produce to reach our tables.
