About fifteen members of San Crispín were able to enjoy a visit and tasting experience at the Finca de Santo Domingo in Punta Prima last Sunday. It was an initiative that we proposed to you to get to know the regenerative agriculture practices that they carry out with those that produce the products that we can find in our stores.
After the welcome that was carried out by Jone Iurrebaso, head of the Gov4all project where San Crispín is collaborating at a European level, Sergi Riudavets, head and owner, explained to us that this family farm began in 2014 with the recovery of a 15,000 m² farm near Punta Prima, betting on the production of seasonal organic fruits and vegetables and local varieties. Three years ago, they took a step further and adopted the regenerative vegetable garden with permanent terrace cultivation, with a technique that uses compost and avoids tilling the land, favoring the microbial life of the soil, improving water retention and reducing weeds. This methodology has allowed them to significantly increase productivity per square meter and allows them to harvest more crops per year. In addition, they reuse plant waste to make compost.
We were able to walk around the entire farm, which currently has 42 terraces where they grow a wide variety of products of all kinds, from chard, carrots, lettuce, kale, fennel, radishes and aromatic herbs, among others. They also told us about their new line of organic micro-sprouts and lettuce packaged in compostable bags, which is working very well and which you can also find in San Crispín.
At the end of the visit, we were able to enjoy a tasting of products that rounded off the experience and left us all more eager to return another day and to also visit other producers who supply our cooperative with the aim of giving visibility and highlighting the work they do. Stay tuned!
